The Legal Aid Coalition of Southeastern Massachusetts retained the UMass Dartmouth Center for Policy Analysis to conduct an update of its 2003 Legal Needs Assessment Survey. The goal of the survey is to identify the most critical legal needs of low-income residents in Barnstable, Bristol, Dukes, Nantucket and Plymouth Counties as well as the towns of Avon and Stoughton in Norfolk County. Low-income persons are defined as those with incomes less than 125 percent of the federally-defined poverty level.

The study includes three major components: a telephone survey of low-income residents in the five county target area, a self-administered survey completed by low-income residents at various sites throughout the five county target area, and two focus groups held in New Bedford and Barnstable, Massachusetts.

    Volunteerism Opportunities at NCLA

Each year NCLA hires one volunteer through AmeriCorps' Massachusetts Legal Assistance for Self-Sufficiency Program (MLASSP). Volunteers work a full-time schedule and while enlisted gain valuable work experience, an educational award, and a living stipend.

Our 2007-2008 volunteer, Sarah Edwards, is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and a former intern of the Bristol County District Attorney's Office. Sarah primarily worked within our Private Attorney Involvement project recruiting pro bono attorneys and hosting pro se and bankruptcy clinics but participated in an array of other projects as well including domestic violence coalitions and community outreach events. Sarah's term of service ended in August of 2008, and she went on to pursue a career in another non-profit.

If you are interested in enlisting for a year of service with the AmeriCorps' MLASSP, please visit the links below:
